What's a big belly?

If your waist to height ratio is > 0.5, that qualifies as a big gut.

Take your largest waist diameter (not your pants size) and divide by your height (in inches) to get your W/H ratio.

Course Structure

The Glycemic Index

The glycemic index (or GI) is a ranking of carbohydrates on a scale from 0 to 100 according to the extent to which they raise blood sugar (glucose) levels after eating.?

The Insulin Response

When we eat a carbohydrate rich meal, blood sugar levels increase as the carbohydrates are broken down into their base molecules - sugar. As blood sugar levels increase, insulin is released in response. Insulin is a hormone which moves glucose (sugar) from the blood into the muscles and fat cells for storage.

Why It Matters

A lot of bad things happen with chronically elevated blood sugar. Stuff like:

  1. You pee a lot and drink a lot.
  2. You're tired all the time.
  3. Your blood gets syrupy.
  4. It can rob your vision.
  5. You have pain in your extremities.
  6. Your feet can get infected.
  7. It crimps your sex life.
  8. It messes with your gut.
  9. It harms your kidneys.
  10. Your heart and brain are at risk.
  11. It can affect your memory.
  12. It can ruin your smile (tooth decay).
  13. It can cause bladder problems.
  14. Your skin takes a beating.
  15. And one of the biggest problems is you have symptoms at all but the damage is being done none the less.
